U.S. News & World Report touts USD as one of nation’s best

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota ranks as one of the “Best National Universities,” according to U.S. News & World Report. In the magazine’s annual “America’s Best Colleges 2010” issue, USD is listed as one of the top 190 institutions in the United States, ranking in the same “Best National Universities” category as George Mason University (Va.), DePaul University (Ill.), Oklahoma State University, Temple University (Pa.), Kansas State University, and West Virginia University. This is the 19th consecutive year that USD has been featured on this prestigious list.

"To be named one of America's Best National Universities by U.S. News and World Report for 19 straight years is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the USD community," said James W. Abbott, president of The University of South Dakota. "Thanks to our faculty’s extraordinary commitment to education, research and service, our students have an opportunity to excel in the classroom and laboratory, preparing them for a successful career after college."

USD is the highest ranking South Dakota university to be featured in the "Best National Universities" category. "Best National Universities" recognition is based on several key credentials of educational quality, including academic excellence, peer assessment, faculty resources, graduation and retention rates, and student selectivity. Over the past 26 years, the U.S. News college rankings, which groups schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, has grown to be the most comprehensive research tool for students and parents considering higher education opportunities.

The annual rankings provided by U.S. News and World Report are a significant resource for college-bound students and their parents. More than 1,400 colleges and universities were surveyed for the "America's Best Colleges 2010" edition, which spotlights schools with outstanding academic programs, study abroad opportunities, successful internship programs and service learning curriculum.

The exclusive rankings will be featured in the 2010 "America's Best Colleges" guidebook, which will be available on newsstands Tuesday, Aug. 25. For more information about America’s Best Colleges, please visit www.usnews.com/colleges.
