DWP at The U hosts 2010 Summer Invitational Institute

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The Dakota Writing Project (DWP) at The University of South Dakota invites teachers for an institute of learning at the 2010 DWP Summer Invitational Institute (SII). Innovative and dedicated teachers of any discipline or grade level can apply for the program, which is scheduled Mondays through Thursdays, June 7-July 1 at The U.

The SII is an opportunity to join a supportive community of South Dakota teachers known for their excellence, who can help others to become more competent, confident teachers of writing. At this institute, teachers will learn new strategies for teaching writing in the classroom. They will share best practices and exchange new ideas. Teachers will also explore current theory and practice in the teaching of writing and develop effective demonstrations that they can share with other educators at their schools.

Participants accepted for the summer institute are required to attend a pre-institute on Saturday, May 1 and a fall reunion on Saturday, Sept. 18. Teachers with access to the Dakota Digital Network (DDN) can attend the pre-institute and fall reunion through DDN.

DWP teachers earn six hours of graduate credit in English for attending the Institute. The Dakota Writing Project pays half of the tuition and full fees. While participants are responsible for the remaining tuition, South Dakota educators are eligible for South Dakota’s reduced-tuition program by meeting certain criteria (available at www.sdbor.edu/k-12educators/documents/ReducedTuitionform.doc). Participants are responsible for lodging, food and other expenses during the institute.

The application deadline is Friday, March 12. Late applications will be considered, depending on space available. For more information, including a complete listing of necessary application materials, please visit http://orgs.usd.edu/dwp or contact the Dakota Writing Project at dwp@usd.edu.
