English professor to present 58th Harrington Lecture at USD

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Brian Bedard, Ph.D., professor of English at The University of South Dakota, will present the 58th annual Harrington Lecture at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21 in Farber Hall, which is located at Old Main on the USD campus.

Bedard, a member of the USD faculty since 1990, will deliver the program, “Dreaming Dakota: Image and Story.” Bedard teaches Creative Writing and 20th Century American Fiction courses at The U. In 2008, the South Dakota Council of Teachers of English honored Bedard as its 2008 South Dakota Author of the Year. His short story collection, “Grieving on the Run,” received the 2006 Serena McDonald Kennedy Award for short fiction and was published in 2007. His first collection of short stories, “Hour of the Beast,” was published more than two decades ago. Bedard received his Ph.D. from the University of Utah.

The Harrington Lecture Series is an annual event featuring a distinguished professor with long-standing service to the College of Arts and Sciences in memory of the late Elbert Harrington, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor Emeritus of communication.
