International Education Week to be highlighted at USD

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota is celebrating International Education Week, Oct. 12-15.

Activities beginning Tuesday, Oct. 12 feature international tea tasting at 1 p.m. at the main level of the Muenster University Center and a 3 p.m. discussion for faculty interested in leading students during a study abroad opportunity in Muenster University Center 211.

On Wednesday, Oct. 13, the main level of the Muenster University Center will host a Global Learning and Engagement Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The fair is a comprehensive exhibition of the study away program available to USD students as well as a forum showcasing the extraordinary service-learning and undergraduate research opportunities through the Center for Academic Engagement. Additional Wednesday activities include a noon forum in the ballroom of the Muenster University Center, sponsored by the Beacom School of Business; and an information session with three USD professors as they discuss their 2011 month-long, interdisciplinary sailing expedition course around Greece.

Thursday (Oct. 14) and Friday (Oct. 15) events include more information about study abroad for USD students, including available scholarships and international research opportunities; lunchtime entertainment featuring authentic Spanish dancing at the MUC Pit Lounge; and the Global Palate – a cultural culinary sampler for the campus community and guests of Family Weekend to learn more about other cultures and their foods.

“As part of the University’s focus and strategic plan to expand study abroad opportunities for our students, International Education Week is a great way for students to learn more about USD’s Global Learning programs and how studying abroad can broaden their world perspective,” said Sarah Wittmuss, director of the Center for Academic Engagement at USD.

International Education Week, nationally, is a joint initiative between the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.
