University Theatre presents social drama 'Boy Gets Girl'

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota Department of Theatre continues its season with Rebecca Gilman’s chilling drama “Boy Gets Girl.” With performances in the Arena Theatre of the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts, March 24-28, “Boy Gets Girl” is a story of romantic pursuit gone awry.

Under the direction of graduate student Rachel Foulks of Ponca, Neb., “Boy Gets Girl” follows Theresa, played by Danielle Herren of Sioux Falls, S.D. Theresa is a young and successful reporter, who goes on a blind date with Tony, portrayed by Aaron Kuchta of Hartington, Neb. After two awkward yet illuminating dates, Theresa sees no point in continuing the relationship. Tony thinks otherwise and begins to stalk Theresa, threatening her personal safety and her ability to maintain her identity.

Theresa enlists the aid of her boss Howard (Tom Crouse of Morris, Minn.) and coworkers Mercer (Allen Jones of Miller, S.D.) and Harriet (Brooke Grassby of Rapid City, S.D.), but she is eventually forced to call upon the assistance of Detective Beck (Erin Gallion of Salina, Kan.).  To Theresa’s surprise, the only solace that she finds comes from her interviews with the aged, irreverent adult film director Les Kennkat (Kevin Noteboom of Bloomington, Minn.).  Hiding in plain sight, Tony is as menacing as he is anonymous, and Theresa is left increasingly defenseless as her sense of self is systemically stripped away.

“Boy Gets Girl” contains adult themes and language. Performances are March 24-27 at 7:30 p.m. and March 28 at 2 p.m. in the Arena Theatre.  A post-show discussion on the issues of stalking, sexism and the idea of romantic pursuit will immediately follow the March 25 performance. Tickets, which are $10 for adults, $6 for K-12 and non-USD students with ID and $4 for USD students with ID, can be reserved starting March 17 by calling the USD Theatre Box Office at (605) 677-5400 or purchased online at www.usd.edu/theatre. Box office hours are noon to 5 p.m.
