VERMILLION, S.D. -- Student broadcasters from The University of South Dakota were recognized at the David L. Adams Apple Awards for the best in college journalism.
The USD student newscasts received second place in their respective categories for “Best TV Broadcast” and “Best Radio Broadcast” at the 2011 National College Media Convention in New York City recently. Only 13 college media organizations captured top honors at the conference, including the news departments from USD.
U. News TV was honored for a November 2010 newscast produced by Kenny Bass of Tyndall, S.D., and Emily (Hunhoff) Van Zee of Yankton, S.D. U. News Radio was honored for a November 2010 newscast produced by student News Director Jarrod Tell of Mason City, Iowa.
USD’s U. News finished second to the Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning of Toronto, Canada. Humber News received the first place honor in both Best TV and Best Radio Broadcast categories.
U. News TV, Radio and Online adviser is Michelle Van Maanen, Ed.D., chair of the USD Department of Contemporary Media and Journalism. KYOT-TV is advised by Todd Mechling, a CMJ instructor at The U, and KAOR-FM is advised by Candace Walton, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the CMJ department.
Named in honor of David L. Adams, a longtime College Media Advisers stalwart and former adviser at Indiana University, the Apple Awards have long been a feature of the spring college media conference, which was attended by more than 1,200 student journalists and advisers in 2011.
