Best of USD student art on display at 25th Stilwell Student Exhibition

VERMILLION, S.D. -- University Art Galleries at the University of South Dakota will host the 25th annual Stilwell Student Juried Exhibition in the John A. Day Gallery in the Warren M. Lee Center for Fine Arts, Friday, Feb. 10 through Wednesday, Feb. 29.

This year’s Stilwell exhibition features the best of prints, paintings, ceramics, sculpture and additional artwork produced by students presently enrolled in the University of South Dakota Art Department. A reception for the artists and an awards announcement is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Friday, February 10, at 5 p.m. The reception and awards announcement, which are free and open to the public, also feature John Jennings, juror for the annual student juried exhibition.

Jennings, currently an associate professor of visual studies at the State University of New York-Buffalo, comes from a graphic design background. His creative work explores masculinity; what it looks like in comic book art manifested in the “superhero” as well as how masculinity is performed in hip-hop and African-American culture. Combining illustrations, comic book art and inspirations from hip-hop music, Jennings combats stereotypes with his art.

The exhibit is named for former chair and professor of art Wilber Stilwell and his wife, Gladys and the Stilwell family, who continue to provide support for the exhibition. Stilwell, who joined the USD faculty immediately after receiving his master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1941, served on the department of art faculty at USD for 32 years and as department chair for 26 years.

The John A. Day Gallery in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts is open free of charge to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. on weekends.
