VERMILLION, S.D. -- Four unique artistic exhibitions are on display at University Libraries at the University of South Dakota now through May 4.
The exhibits at the I.D. Weeks Library, courtesy of the University Art Galleries, are “Corroborations 2012,” located in the second floor exhibition cases; tapestry weavings by award-winning South Dakota tapestry artist Grete Bodøgaard are at the University Libraries Gallery in the Academic Commons; “Getting Graphic,” an exhibit of graphic novels, is on the west side of the second floor; and “SkateCreate” is featured at the Student Gallery on the west side of the second floor.
“Corroborations 2012” pairs USD visual arts students with poetry majors and the exhibit showcases their collaborative work while Bodøgaard’s exhibition highlights Norwegian tapestry techniques dating back to 1200 A.D. but the subjects in her work are contemporary. Bodøgaard received the South Dakota Governor’s Award in the Arts for Creative Achievement in 2003. “Getting Graphic” is an exhibit that was created by USD Education Librarian Abby Moore and features popular genres of graphic novels, including superhero stories, manga, crime, sci-fi/fantasy and non-fiction as well as graphic novels that were adapted to the big screen.
“SkateCreate,” which received funding through a USD Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities grant, is an exhibition of skateboard designs created by students in the First-Year Seminar class – a freshman art introductory course. Students participating in the project purchased blank skateboard decks and art materials, and chose a specific design technique for their skateboards (painting, carving or printing). With this project, students were involved in the grant writing process, exhibit assembly and pushed their creativity into mediums they had not explored before.
All of the exhibits are free and open to the public. A campus reception honoring the artists is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20 at the University Libraries.
