USD student recipient of international Young Scientist Award

VERMILLION, S.D. -- University of South Dakota student Shivatharsiny Rasalingam is the recipient of a Young Scientist Award presented by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon of Sri Lanka. Rasalingam is a Ph.D. student in the materials chemistry program at USD.

A native of Sri Lanka, Shivatharsiny received the award at the International Conference on Chemical Sciences 2012, organized by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon at Colombo, Sri Lanka. The conference was co-sponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Shivatharsiny was selected based on her research presentation, “Adsorption of Rhodamine B Dye over Titania-Silica Porous Materials.” Sridhar Budhi, a former USD Chemistry graduate student, and Rui Peng, a graduate student in chemistry at USD, also contributed to this research project.

Shivatharsiny is pursuing research in the group supervised by Dr. Ranjit Koodali of the USD Department of Chemistry. In addition, she also received the Best Teaching Assistant Award presented by the chemistry department for exemplary teaching assistantship duties during the 2011-12 academic year.
