Wellness Center receives 2013 Outstanding Sports Facilities Award

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota Wellness Center was recently named as one of the nation’s Outstanding Sports Facilities (OSF) by NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation.

The USD Wellness Center is one of 13 recipients of an OSF Award, which was presented at the NIRSA Annual Conference and Recreational Exposition earlier this month in Las Vegas, Nev. Each winner, according to NIRSA, is considered a model by which other collegiate recreational facilities should be measured and from which others can benefit. NIRSA began presenting annual OSF awards for creative, innovative designs of new or expanded facilities in 1988.

“These facilities continue to set themselves apart from the rest and are truly a way to attract the college student to their respective university,” said Joshua Bisher, Senior Program Director, Office of Recreation Services at Ball State University and chair of NIRSA’s 2012-13 OSF Award Selection Committee. “They only enhance the holistic student experience and provide some of the best learning opportunities outside of the classroom.”

NIRSA (www.nirsa.org) member institutions with construction projects no more than two years old, with a facility over 20,000 square feet, and total construction costs of at least $2 million are eligible for an OSF Award. More information is available at www.nirsa.org/OSFAwards; including a complete list of 2013 OSF Award recipients.

The 61,000 square-foot USD Wellness Center, which opened on Jan. 17, 2011 and serves as a recreation hub for USD students and the city of Vermillion, is home to USD intramural sports, and features racquetball courts, courts for basketball and volleyball, state-of-the-art workout and training equipment, a climbing wall that stands 38-feet tall, and fitness studios.
