University of South Dakota awarded Top Military-Friendly University by Military Advanced Education

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota has been named a Top Military-Friendly University by Military Advanced Education.

From community colleges to state universities, online universities and nationally-known centers of higher learning, Military Advanced Education’s 2014 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges & Universities provides potential students with information about institutions that go out of their way to give back to men and women in uniform. Military Advanced Education cited USD for having support services like the Student Veterans Resource Center on campus to assist active duty and veteran students. USD was also praised for generating events that annually promote military service and veterans within the community, including a Veterans Day Community Supper, the annual Military Appreciation Football Game, cords for graduating students and Veterans Week activities.

Criteria used to designate institutions as Top Military-Friendly included the flexibility of online learning options, extent of transfer credits accepted by degree level, on campus ROTC programs, Servicemember Opportunity Colleges participation, support provided to families of service members and full-time counselors trained in veteran-specific mental health concerns.

“We believe the Guide serves as an invaluable tool for both education services officers and transition officers when advising service members about their educational opportunities,” said Kelly Fodel, MAE editor.

Military Advanced Education serves education services officers and transition officers at every U.S. military installation, along with the service members they counsel. Published 10 times yearly, MAE’s editorial coverage includes exclusive interviews with military executive leadership, educators, and members of Congress; best practices; career and transition spotlights, servicemember, school, and program profiles, and periodic special reports.
