USD fraternity fundraiser shatters records

VERMILLION, S.D. -- For the 18th consecutive year, Pi Kappa Alpha at the University of South Dakota hosted its annual Thursday Night Live charity event and raised $5,000 for Cure Kids Cancer, Pi Kappa Alpha’s charity of choice. To date the PIKES have donated more than $20,000 to Cure Kids Cancer.

Thursday Night Live is a sketch-comedy show developed for college audiences. More than 350 USD students, faculty and staff, parents, and community members joined the event at Aalfs Auditorium on Nov. 6. Additionally, the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity hosted its Dream Girl Scholarship Competition. Amanda Wagemann, a second-year student from Aberdeen, S.D., will serve as Pi Kappa Alpha’s 2015 Dream Girl. Moreover, Alpha Xi Delta Sorority at USD won the annual Thursday Night Live Banner Competition by receiving more than 1,500 Facebook “likes” for the banner entry.

“Cure Kids Cancer is a special organization to our fraternity,” stated Brent Olinger, of Emery, S.D., a fourth-year student and PIKE member who is proud of his fraternity’s accomplishments. “We are helping local kids battling for their lives and PIKE is committed to making a difference.”

Since Thursday Night Lives’ inception 18 years ago, the PIKES have raised more than $35,000.00 for various charities. The 18th annual Thursday Night Live show’s major sponsors were Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, Little Italy’s, Classic Hits 106.3, iHelp Student Loans, and Czeckers Sports Bar and grill.

Cure Kids Cancer’s mission is to help children's cancer centers, like the one at Sanford Children's Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., find life-saving treatments and eventually cures for children's cancer by raising funds and awareness. In honor of Pi Kappa Alpha’s strong connection to Cure Kids Cancer, the chapter is fulfilling a $25,000 pledge and has a room named in PIKE’s honor at Sanford Children’s Hospital, the Castle of Care™ in Sioux Falls, S.D. Cure Kids Cancer is a program of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
