In 1989, Rapid City Regional Hospital made the decision to close its three-year diploma program. The Legislature approved the delivery of the two year associate degree program as well as the South Dakota State University baccalaureate nursing program to Rapid City in an effort to ease the nursing shortage in the Western part of the State. The first USD class graduated in 1991. A West River Nursing Consortium was established to facilitate the establishment of nursing education in western South Dakota. Rapid City Regional Hospital provides space for faculty offices, classrooms, and a learning lab in the Health Science Center in Rapid City.
