STATE CAPITOL HOSTS SOUTH
DAKOTA
STUDENT RESEARCHERS
Board of Regents Executive Director Tad Perry, System Vice President
for Research Dan Farrington, Jim Hagen, Secretary of Tourism and Development,
many state legislators, and other state officials attended the Eighth Annual
Student Research Poster Session held in the Capitol Rotunda in Pierre on
February 15, 2005. Dr. Perry welcomed the students and Jim Hagen spoke to
the group about the opportunities available to them in South Dakota.
Approximately 135 students from public and private colleges and universities
in South Dakota presented 95 posters of their research project results
and discussed how research has enhanced their education. The poster session
displayed results from student research in the sciences, humanities and social
sciences, engineering, nursing, business, education, and the arts. The session
was sponsored by the South Dakota Board of Regents, the South Dakota EPSCoR
program, and the South Dakota Academy of Science. Posters covered topics
such as mechanisms of action of the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome
Virus (PRRSV), cell reprogramming to treat Type I Diabetes, effects of various
factors on student grade point average, development of a new water treatment
method to remove endocrine disruptor chemicals, development of microorganisms
to produce biosealants to repair cracks, reptile surveys in the Black Hills,
more effective writing instruction techniques, and detection of sylvatic
plague in black-tailed prairie dogs. Students pursued their projects during
their undergraduate programs but outside of their normal classroom activities.
In addition to providing legislators with a first-hand look at the research
in universities, the session enabled students to observe the everyday routines
of the elected officials. Both senators and representatives took time to
visit the poster displays after they adjourned from session.
