Monsignor Doyle to give spring commencement address at the U

The address, titled "For everything that has been - YES! with gratitude; for everything that will be - YES! with hope," will be the highlight of ceremonies scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at the DakotaDome in Vermillion. Approximately 950 students are candidates for degrees that will be conferred by President James W. Abbot and Regent James O. Hansen.

Monsignor Doyle was reared in Lennox, S.D.  He graduated from St. Thomas Military Academy in St. Paul, Minn. and did his undergraduate and graduate work at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul also, before being ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Sioux Falls at its Cathedral in 1957.

After serving at parishes in Mitchell and Centerville, he did advanced graduate work in Theology at the University of San Francisco. He was appointed in 1967 to the Chair of Religious Studies at The University of South Dakota in the College of Arts and Sciences. He was also served as Director of the USD Newman Center and held both positions for the next twelve years. He will be given an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters by the U in recognition of his service to the University and state.

During his tenure at the U, Monsignor Doyle was twice elected by vote of the student body "Outstanding Teacher of the Year" and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in India. Before leaving the U in 1979, he was selected by the faculty to receive the Annual Distinguished Service Award at commencement ceremonies that year.

In 1979, Monsignor Doyle was appointed founding pastor of St. Michael Parish in Western Sioux Falls, and remained there for the next ten years. That parish has grown to become the largest Church of any denomination in the state, and will soon be divided into two parishes. He also served as Pastor of St. Mary in Sioux Falls, and St. Thomas More in Brookings.

In 1996, he was elevated to the rank of Monsignor by the Vatican. For many years, he has served as Chaplain for the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and a frequent contributing writer for the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. In his retirement in Sioux Falls, he continues in part time priestly assignments.

University Honors Program- The designation of University Scholar is an unusual and significant honor granted to an undergraduate student by The University of South Dakota. In addition to high level scholarship, it requires participation in the University Honors Program, culminating in successful completion of a substantial creative senior project. The designation of University Honors signifies that an undergraduate student has completed all the requirements of the University Honors Program. This program includes a broad curriculum involving the completion of a series of seminars and maintenance of high academic standards. Thesis Scholars complete three Honors seminars and a substantial creative senior project.

A Thesis with High Distinction is an original contribution that is exemplary both in the selection of the problem and the presentation of the research and results in a writing style that is clear and engaging. Similarly, a Thesis with Distinction is also exceptionally well written but may not contribute original findings.
