Graduating seniors from Beacom ‘ace’ national exam

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Graduating seniors from The University of South Dakota Beacom School of Business showed that they mean business as they scored exceptionally high in a national exit exam for business school graduates. This is the second time in as many years that graduating seniors from The U scored in the top 10 percent nationally.
Produced by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) of Princeton, N.J., about 450 colleges and universities administer this exam to their undergraduate business graduates in the United States. According to Michael Keller, J.D., dean of the Beacom School of Business, the test is a measure of basic skills across all business disciplines. Keller indicated that the test authors believe the exam asks questions every business graduate should know.

"We use this test as an assessment of how well we are teaching basic skills across all the specialty areas a graduate needs to know to be immediately effective in an enterprise," Keller explained. "Doing well on this exam is one of the core goals at the Beacom School of Business. We believe that a nationally-administered exam tells us how we are doing on enterprise skills comparative to other schools and other students. We are extremely proud of achieving such an outstanding grade."

One hundred and fifteen graduating seniors from USD took the exam and scored an average of 161 points, which was the cutoff for the 90th percentile nationally. Designed to assess student understanding in key areas as they finish their undergraduate business degree, USD students performed very well in the nine subject categories.
