Sorcerer’s Apprentice Creative Writing camp at The U |
| VERMILLION, S.D. -- School administrators, teachers, and other educators are invited to nominate talented high school students for the 2009 Sorcerer’s Apprentice: A Creative Writing Camp on Saturday, Sept.26 at The University of South Dakota. |
| Sponsored by the Dakota Writing Project (DWP), a local teachers' organization affiliated with the National Writing Project, and the Vermillion Literary Project (VLP), an award-winning student organization, the one-day camp is 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Activities include workshops on microfiction (short-short fiction), creative nonfiction, poetry, theatre, revision, and performance. There will also be a public reading in Farber Hall. No experience with creative writing is necessary.
Camp workshop leaders include Mary Begley of Vermillion High School, USD's Paula Burns, Connie Krueger of Rapid City (S.D.) North Middle School, Anne Moege from Mitchell (S.D.) Middle School, Lindy Obach from University Center in Sioux Falls, S.D., Al Rutherford of Little Wound High School, Pine Ridge Reservation, and Associate Professor Lee Ann Roripaugh of The University of South Dakota. Additional DWP teacher-consultants and leaders from Prairie Winds, a South Dakota organization working to improve student and teacher writing, will assist with Burns’ workshop. This is the fourth year of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice Camp. Last year, 29 student writers from South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska participated in the event. A $50 registration fee includes a day of workshops, a camp T-shirt, lunch, refreshments and a copy of the VLP magazine. A limited number of reduced-fee scholarships based on financial need are available. Please e-mail dwp@usd.edu for more information. The deadline to register is Sept. 18. Enrollment is limited, so nominated students are encouraged to register as soon as possible.
