Msgr. James Doyle to be honored with dedication at USD

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota will honor Monsignor James Michael Doyle at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29 with a ribbon cutting ceremony dedicating room 212 at the Muenster University Center in Doyle’s name.

As chairperson of religious studies at USD from 1967-1979, Doyle was twice voted outstanding teacher of the year by students at The U. Additionally, he is a recipient of the USD Distinguished Service Award, an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters and a member of the South Dakota Hall of Fame having served USD and Catholic parishes across the state with great distinction.

Doyle, a Fulbright Scholar from Lennox, S.D., endowed a Humanities Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences following inspiration from Cardinal John Henry Newman’s “The Idea of a University.” Newman Centers across the United States are named for the former Cardinal, including the facility at USD.
