USD to dedicate new School of Business building on Oct. 9 |
| VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota is hosting a ceremony at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9 to dedicate its new School of Business building. The ceremony will take place inside the atrium of the new facility that opened this fall. Scheduled speakers for the event include USD President James W. Abbott; Carole Pagones, a member of the South Dakota Board of Regents; Paul Lewis, chairperson of the USD Foundation; Brad Jankord, president of the Beacom School of Business Council of Presidents; Sioux Falls entrepreneur Miles Beacom, for whom the Beacom School of Business is named; and Michael Keller, dean of the Beacom School of Business. |
| Construction began in the fall of 2008 on the $19.5 million facility, which is located directly southeast of the Al Neuharth Media Center on The U’s campus. The building, home to the Beacom School of Business, provides 69,000 square feet of state-of-the-art classrooms, conference rooms, faculty offices and laboratories. Additional features include a large auditorium for faculty and guest lecturers, a research center, and student and faculty interaction rooms. These spaces will be flexible to accommodate the latest teaching and problem-solving techniques that businesses require of top college graduates.
“This new building offers us a first-rate business school unmatched in the region, helping us develop the region’s economy for the 21st century,” said Keller. “That economy will be dependent on business innovation and entrepreneurial energy. The new building will support, encourage and incubate exactly that kind of energy.” The USD Foundation received a gift of $5 million toward construction of the new School of Business building from a local philanthropist in honor of Beacom. The donation, part of the $133 million Campaign South Dakota fund drive, was presented to the University to ensure that the Beacom School of Business remains competitive with the best small business schools in the United States. Additional money for the project is from private donations and from the students of South Dakota through the South Dakota Higher Education Facilities Fund (HEFF). HEFF funds are a percentage of student tuition dollars directed toward capital improvement projects at state universities.
