USD students, professor host free classical music concert |
| VERMILLION, S.D. -- The Washington Street Art Center will showcase classical music featuring students from The University of South Dakota and Marie-Elaine Gagnon, D.M.A, an assistant professor of music at The U, during a free concert from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8. |
| As part of an Interdisciplinary Education and Action (IdEA) capstone course at USD, students will perform selections by classical composers from around the world. The IdEA course, which focused on musical composers and their involvement in political history, was taught by Gagnon, an accomplished cellist who will also perform selected classical pieces, including works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Dmitri Shostakovich.
“It’s a great opportunity for everyone to have fun,” admitted USD student Dan’ae Hill, part of Gagnon’s IdEA capstone course, “but even more so for everyone to learn about classical composers and political issues.” Added Norma Wilson, president of the Vermillion Area Arts Council, This is a rare opportunity for us to hear one of the finest classical musicians in our state up close and personal." The event, free and open to the public, is at the Washington Street Art Center, which is located at 202 Washington St., in Vermillion. A unique part of the USD education, the IdEA Program challenges students to explore, in an interdisciplinary manner, questions inherent in a global, modern society and to integrate their previous academic experiences in the process. Students are offered the opportunity to consider the impact the liberal arts and liberal learning have on their own lives as they attend The University of South Dakota.
