Students from The U to meet with billionaire Warren Buffett

VERMILLION, S.D. -- It’s one thing to learn about business acumen and financial strategies in the classroom, but having the chance to learn directly from a billionaire investor is another. That will be the case on Friday for 27 students from the Beacom School of Business at The University of South Dakota, who will meet with Omaha businessman Warren Buffett.

While it’s difficult for some of the world’s shrewdest investors to meet with Buffett on an annual basis, this will be the fourth time in five years that USD business majors will spend a whole morning with the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway.  The trip is being organized by the USD Student Chapter of the Financial Management Association.

“With Berkshire Hathaway’s $34 billion acquisition of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. just this week, and the significant news coverage devoted to it, what a unique opportunity this is for Beacom School of Business students,” stated Kumoli Ramakrishnan, Ph.D., associate professor of finance, who acknowledged that very few students are afforded the opportunity each year to spend time with Buffett.

“Mr. Buffett is always gracious with his time with our students,” Ramakrishnan added. “This event is a high point in most students’ lives, especially during such an extraordinary time for the U.S. and global economies.  Getting to peek inside the mind of this legendary investor and a great human being is an amazing experience.”

In addition to dining at Piccolo Pete’s with the “Oracle of Omaha” on Friday, the group from USD will have a 90-minute question and answer session with Buffett as well as tours of Berkshire Hathaway-owned companies Nebraska Furniture Mart and Borsheim’s Jewelry.
