Doug Ganschow is November Employee of the Month at USD |
| VERMILLION, S.D. -- a farmer, Doug Ganschow knows that they ‘key’ to having a successful annual harvest is being able to adapt to several different jobs around the farm. As a locksmith at The University of South Dakota, Ganschow knows that the “key” to finishing jobs in facilities management also depend on being able to do multiple tasks at multiple times, reasons why he was named November Career Services Employee of the Month. |
| “Doug has that quality as a lead worker to do that extra to help anyone in need, be it shop personnel in his daily work or to help department heads with re-keying entire buildings,” noted Ganschow’s supervisor, Arden Junker. “Doug’s work quality and quantity reflect on the many jobs that he and his workers complete with professionalism in their daily job duties.”
Ganschow has had a variety of duties from plumber to the HVAC shop since beginning as a full-time USD employee in 1991. He’s also had to deal with a variety of issues as locksmith for the University, a position he’s held since 2001. “Usually it’s dealing with broken doors but there are several things on a daily basis,” he described. “It depends on the day and it depends on the challenge, but it’s been a fun place to work all these years.” What’s been more challenging for Ganschow this fall, is farming. While his soybean crop is finally out of the fields, he’s had to wait just a little bit longer to harvest his corn crop. “My brother and I farm together,” he mentioned. “I’ve farmed all my life. It’s peaceful and something I’m able to do with family, so I enjoy it.” A native of rural Wakonda, S.D., he and his brother farm 400 acres. He continues to reside in Wakonda with his wife, Pam, and their son and daughter. In noting his value to USD’s Facilities Management Department, Junker summarized in his nomination that Ganschow works directly with the key shop, paint shop and residential life maintenance and that, “we all need to remember each time we greet Doug that he is one of the ‘key’ men at USD and facilities management.” A photo of Ganschow receiving his award from Richard Van Den Hul, vice president of finance and administration at USD, is available for download at www.usd.edu/urelations/images/Doug_Ganschow.jpg. |
