Chair of Physical Therapy Department appointed to state board

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Lana R. Svien P.T., Ph.D., M.A., chair of the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of South Dakota, has been appointed to the Physical Therapy Advisory Committee of the South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners. In this capacity, Svien will advise the board on matters pertaining to physical therapy practice, attend regular board meetings and work with the board’s executive director on matters as they arise.
 

“Dr. Svien is respected internationally for her work and we are fortunate to have her expertise here at the School of Health Sciences,” said Michael J. Lawler, dean of USD’s School of Health Sciences.

Svien has taught in USD’s Department of Physical Therapy for the past 22 years, where she has been widely recognized for professional excellence, particularly for her promotion of minority and rural health. In 2011, she was awarded USD’s Diversity Award and the Dr. Ronnie Leavitt Award for Leadership in the Promotion on Social Responsibility in Physical Therapy from the American Physical Therapy Association. Additionally, in 2008, she was named “Physical Therapist of the Year” by the South Dakota Physical Therapy Association. Svien earned her doctorate in pediatric medical science from the University of Nebraska in 2002, her master’s degree in anatomy from the University of South Dakota in 1983 and completed her undergraduate work at the University of Wisconsin in 1975.
