South Dakota Supreme Court to hear nine oral arguments during Term of Court at USD School of Law

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The South Dakota Supreme Court will be in session for three days at the University of South Dakota School of Law. The South Dakota Supreme Court will hear nine oral arguments during the March 2012 Term of Court at the law school courtroom, March 19-21.
 

Chief Justice David Gilbertson (USD School of Law, ’75) and Justices John Konenkamp (’74), Steven Zinter (’75), Glen Severson (’75) and Lori Wilbur (’77) will hear three cases each morning with afternoon sessions reserved for written appellate briefs. Case synopses will also be available each morning for the public.

Oral arguments to be heard on Monday, March 19 include Peggy A. Detmers and Detmers Studio, Inc. vs. Kevin Costner and The Dunbar, Inc., 9 a.m.; State of South Dakota vs. John Graham, A.K.A. John Boy Patton, 10 a.m.; and Michael Manuel vs. Toner Plus, Inc. and South Dakota Department of Labor, Unemployment Insurance Division, 11 a.m. Oral arguments scheduled for Tuesday, March 20 are John Christian Walter vs. John Edward Fuks, 9 a.m.; State of South Dakota vs. Kevin Roger Jucht, 10 a.m.; and DT-Trak Consulting, Inc. vs. Dan Prue, 11 a.m. Oral arguments on the morning of Wednesday, March 21 feature Highmark Federal Credit Union vs. Wells Fargo Financial South Dakota, 9 a.m.; State of South Dakota vs. Dennis Most, 10 a.m.; In the Matter of the Estate of Blair M. “The Supreme Court’s March Term of Court is a tremendous opportunity for our law school students and the university community to see the appellate process in action and learn more about the state’s judicial process,” stated Thomas Geu, dean of the School of Law. “We are also ‘welcoming home’ five alumni leaders of the School of Law as all five members of the South Dakota Supreme Court are graduates of the USD School of Law.”

The South Dakota Supreme Court employs security methods to insure the well-being of all who attend its proceedings. All people attending the morning arguments will need to enter through the Law School building’s southeast door. Book bags, backpacks, and other packages are subject to search and people are encouraged not to bring them to keep the entrance process smooth and without delays. Individuals requiring assistance should contact the State Court Administrator’s Office at (605) 773-3474 at least 48 hours before the session to make any arrangements.
