Earth Day celebration at USD to raise money, awareness for environmental issues

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Students at the University of South Dakota are taking an active role in educating the community and raising awareness of environmental issues for Earth Day 2012.

Students for Environmental Engagement (SEE), a student run organization committed to raising awareness for environmental issues, and students in Environmental Communications at USD are hosting several campus activities on Monday, April 23. Everything from live music and games to a 5K run/walk and a cookout with fresh, locally produced food are scheduled to take place between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on the east lawn of the Muenster University Center.

In addition to several live bands performing throughout the day, USD’s Earth Day schedule includes environmental educational activities, sustainable lifestyle presentations from area organizations and Earth Day contests. There will also be displays available demonstrating how many plastic bottles a household uses in a year and an exhibit showing how much water routine household activities consume.

To register for the 5K, please contact Derek.Zomer@usd.edu. There is a $10 registration fee that will be used as a donation to SEE. All money received will be donated to the South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation in support of the organization’s efforts to preserve South Dakota’s lands, water and wildlife.
