USD student selected to Teach for America program

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Sarah Zephier, a University of South Dakota student from Marty, S.D., was chosen for the 2012 Teach America Program, the national corps of college graduates and professionals who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools.

Zephier, who will graduate from USD in May with a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Indian Studies, is one of more than 5,100 college graduates who are joining Teach for America after more than 48,000 students applied to the program. She was selected to teach in a summer school program run by Teach for America for students in Phoenix, Ariz. public schools under the supervision of a faculty of experienced teachers. Following the intensive summer school program, Zephier will be assigned to teach on either the Rosebud or Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the fall.

Teach for America recruits individuals from all academic majors and backgrounds who have demonstrated outstanding achievement, perseverance and leadership in hopes that they become lifelong leaders in the effort to expand educational opportunity.
