Inaugural Summer Bridge Program at USD concludes with banquet

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Twenty-four first-year students received a head start on their college careers thanks to the University of South Dakota Summer Bridge Program, which concludes with a Summer Bridge Closing Banquet at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3 at the Freedom Forum Conference Room at the Al Neuharth Media Center.

In its first year at USD, the Summer Bridge Program began July 9 as a four-week academic program created to help first-year students adjust to academic and campus life at USD. Students in the program received personalized attention in the daily math and speech courses they’re required to take, and they also dedicated an hour every Monday afternoon to USD’s First Year Experience (FYE), a program specifically created for incoming students to make a successful academic and social transition to college.

“Students received hands on academic advising, participated in study groups and enjoyed getting a chance to acquaint themselves with other incoming freshmen and the resources that campus has to offer,” explained Christina Keller, associate dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at USD. “The Summer Bridge Program was set up in a way that not only provides students with an opportunity to get help in courses that will provide a foundation for their academic careers, it means that they’ll be more likely to graduate within four years at USD.”

While the Summer Bridge Program was established for incoming students to strengthen their academic skills in the fundamentals of speech communication and pre-college algebra, students in the program also had an opportunity to network with USD faculty and their classmates as well as participate in recreational activities, including a Sioux City Explorers baseball game with the USD Alumni Association, swimming, bowling and movie nights.
