USD honored as a Military Friendly School by national publication

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota has been honored by G.I. Jobs as a Military Friendly School for the second consecutive year. G.I. Jobs, the premier magazine for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, designated USD as a 2013 Military Friendly School – a list that honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and veterans as students.

“We are honored to be recognized as a Military Friendly School and proud of the steps we have taken to help the increasing number of student veterans or active military personnel choosing to enroll at the University of South Dakota,” stated Kimberly Grieve, dean of students. “As an institution, it is our goal to do our best to accommodate those who have served and continue to serve our country.”

The 1,739 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year’s Military Friendly School list prioritize the recruitment of students with military experience. USD makes the list by providing veteran students with assistance through the USD Veterans Club, the Fides Grant for staff and faculty development at USD, in-state tuition waivers, special policies for deployment, streamlined registration, the Student Veteran Resource Center, a military transitions course and the AmeriCorps National Grant from the Colorado Campus Compact as well as scholarships and discounts.

The 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools was compiled through extensive research and a data driven survey of more than 8,000 schools nationwide. Methodology and criteria for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board consisting of educators from schools across the country. A detailed list of Military Friendly Schools is highlighted in the annual “Guide to Military Friendly Schools” and on a poster, both of which are distributed to active and former military personnel. The complete list is available online at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com.
