Avera gift establishes new faculty position at Beacom School of Business

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota Beacom School of Business and the University of South Dakota Foundation announce that Greg Carlson, Ph.D., will join the faculty as the first Avera Distinguished Director of Health Services Administration. This new position, created by a gift from Avera, will be responsible for leading the health care degree programs at Beacom and will deliver executive and practitioner education to health care providers in the region.

Carlson holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and political science from Southwest Minnesota State University, a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Ph.D. in health services policy and management from the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. Professionally, he has directed programs and taught courses at Georgia State University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He was manager of Global Health Services with Kimberly-Clark in Alpharetta, Ga. and served as CEO of the Owensboro Medical Health System in Owensboro, Ky. His areas of research and publication focus on leadership and accountability in health care organizations.

“Greg Carlson has more than 29 years of health care administration experience, as well as a Ph.D. in health services policy and management. We are incredibly honored to have Dr. Carlson at USD, and without Avera’s support it would not have been possible,” said Mike Keller, dean of the Beacom School of Business.
