USD fraternity receives highest international award

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota Pi Kappa Alpha (PIKE) Fraternity was honored earlier this month at the fraternity’s summer PIKE University event, The Academy, in Memphis, Tenn. with the Robert Adger Smythe Award, Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity’s most prestigious honor.

The Smythe Awards honor the top percent of 225 chapters and colonies in the United States and Canada and recognizes a group of young men who have committed to the meaning of Scholars, Leaders, Athletes, Gentlemen – Pi Kappa Alpha’s four cornerstones, and to the idea of always being there to support one another and put each other in a position to succeed.

“Our chapter is filled with men who are dedicated not only to USD and the community, but to our chapter,” said Pi Kappa Alpha Chapter President Trenton Karlson, who is from Canton, S.D. “These awards show what a group of brothers banded together can accomplish in the community and internationally.”

The Smythe Award is based upon excelling in 16 areas of operation: membership recruitment, chapter programming, scholastics, philanthropy, community service, member retention, member and new member education, athletic performance, management, risk awareness, campus involvement and leadership, community involvement, consultant vision analysis score, and international involvement.

In addition to earning the Fraternity’s most prestigious honor, the USD PIKES also received the Fraternity’s second highest award, the Raymond L. Orians Chapter Excellence Award.
