Registration opens for South Dakota Scripps Spelling Bee

VERMILLION, S.D. -- For the third consecutive year, the University of South Dakota will serve as host of the South Dakota Scripps Spelling Bee on March 22, 2014 at Farber Hall.

Registration with Scripps is now open and continues through Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Schools, home school associations and home schooled students must be enrolled with Scripps. Students in first through eighth grade are eligible to participate in the regional bees and the University of South Dakota Scripps Spelling Bee, which will feature KSFY’s Nancy Naeve as word pronouncer.

The top four winners from each school will advance to their assigned regional, which includes the Rapid City Journal Regional Bee in Rapid City, S.D. on Feb. 15, 2014; the Corn Palace Regional Spelling Bee at Mitchell, S.D. on Jan. 11, 2014; the Sioux Falls Regional Bee on Feb. 22, 2014; the Northeast Regional Spelling Bee at Castlewood, S.D. on Feb. 8, 2014 and the Southeast Regional Spelling Bee in Vermillion on Feb. 15, 2014. Additional regionals may be added as necessary.

The top winners from each regional will advance to the University of South Dakota Scripps Spelling with an opportunity to be sponsored by USD and represent South Dakota and compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C., May 25 through May 31, 2014. Last year’s University of South Dakota Scripps Spelling winner was Max Oesterling of Custer, S.D., South Dakota Christian Home Educators Association.
