Guest artist piano recital at USD to feature Symeon Waseen

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota Department of Music will present a guest artist piano recital by Symeon Waseen at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Colton Recital Hall in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts. Free and open to the public, the recital by Waseen will feature works by Bartok, Beethoven, Davidovsky, and his own compositions.
 

Waseen, D.M.A., is a professor of music at Black Hills State University and has studied under the tutelage of Thomas Wegren, Marilyn Shrude, Robert Morris and Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon. In addition to composing, Waseen is an active performer, specializing in music by contemporary composers, and has premiered several works written by himself and his colleagues. He was awarded the Eastman School of Music Wayne Brewster Barlow Prize for his “Concerto for Voice and Voices” and in 2012, he was the Commissioned Composer for the South Dakota Music Teachers Association for which he composed “Five Moments” for soprano and piano. Waseen has taught theory, composition and piano at Black Hills State since 2010 and holds a doctorate degree from the Eastman School of Music, a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University in composition, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, with a double major in piano performance and theory/composition.
