Oscar Howe Gallery at USD to exhibit Howe’s ‘Dance of the Warrior’

VERMILLION, S.D. -- University Art Galleries at the University of South Dakota will host a reception for the exhibition, “Dance of the Warrior,” from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4 in the Oscar Howe Gallery at Old Main 116.

On display through Jan. 10, the exhibition showcases the energy and movement of warriors in Oscar Howe’s paintings and drawings, and features warriors depicted in the “studio” style, reflecting Howe’s training at the Santa Fe Indian School. Whether fighting, riding a horse, or dancing in an honor song, Howe portrayed the movement of Sioux (O?héthi Šakówi?) warriors in beautifully composed works. He painted historical warriors, such as the famous Sitting Bull, or portrayed anonymous warriors on horseback for mural preparations and more. This exhibit is from the Oscar Howe permanent collection. The Gallery features three original exhibitions annually.

The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. The Oscar Howe Gallery is open from 1 to 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 for Dakota Days. For more information about the exhibition, please contact Alison Erazmus at Alison.Erazmus@usd.edu or by phone at (605) 677-3177.
