Third annual Tiospaye Diversity Symposium is Thursday at USD

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota is hosting a symposium on diversity, “We Are the Voices of the Silenced” with special guest Andi Zeisler of Bitch Magazine on Thursday, March 27 at the Muenster University Center.
 

Zeisler, a writer, editor and cultural critic, co-founded Bitch Media and her writing on feminism, popular culture, and media has appeared in newspapers and magazines throughout the United States. Her keynote address, “Don’t Just Change the Channel: Why Pop Culture Matters to Feminism, Activism, and Social Justice,” is at 11 a.m. in the Muenster University Center Ballroom.

Additional activities for Thursday’s symposium include five workshops from 1 to 5:30 p.m. on topics such as “Exploring Diversity and Inclusiveness at USD;” “What Does It Mean to Be Transgendered;” “Dangerous Dates and Relationship Deal Breakers;” and “Voices of Pain and Healing.”

Founded by Tiospaye: Native American Student Council, the diversity symposium is open to the community and is sponsored by Spectrum: Gender and Sexuality Alliance; Tiospaye; Union of African American Students; Asian American Student Association; Latino Student Association; Association for the Advancement of Women’s Rights; Women and Gender Studies; University Art Galleries; Native American Cultural Center; Outlaws; President’s Council on Diversity and Inclusiveness; Office for Diversity; Disability Services; Rights and Responsibilities; Students for Inclusive Excellence; Student Veteran Resource Center; Academic and Career Planning Center; Sustainability Program; Center for Academic & Global Engagement; Office of Financial Aid; University Police Department; Center for Teaching and Learning; Student Athlete Success Center and the School of Law.
