‘Retelling’ M.F.A. exhibition on display at Muenster University Center

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The Student Art Gallery in the Muenster University Center at the University of South Dakota is featuring a new exhibition, “Retelling,” an exhibit that explores stories and how they can be reshaped and retold through time. “Retelling” includes work by current USD Art Department students Klaire Pearson and Jennifer H. Padgett. The exhibition is on display on the second floor of the Muenster University Center through Sept. 12.

Pearson just completed her first year in the M.F.A. program at USD. She is a painter and worked on a series that explores the “damsel in distress” stereotype found in popular fairytales. “To fight these stereotypes that portray women as weak, I created a series of oil paintings that give the female characters back their agency,” Pearson said. “The paintings feature close-ups of female protagonists during decisive moments of their stories. The women are active and influence their own tales.”

Padgett, who is entering her third and final year in the M.F.A. program, completed a sampling of prints for the exhibition. “I am exploring the idea of loss of information, memory, and time,” Padgett stated. “The intaglio prints are my interpretation of visual lapses of time and the brain power to recall the exact pure memory as it is decaying from Alzheimer’s.”

The Student Art Gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information about the exhibition please contact Alison Erazmus, Director of the University Art Galleries at Alison.Erazmus@usd.edu or call (605) 677-3177.
