Health Sciences degree from USD earns national praise from education website

VERMILLION, S.D. -- When it comes to health science degree programs, the University of South Dakota is in great shape according to TheBestSchools.org, which lists USD’s bachelor’s degree in health science No. 15 in the article titled “The 25 Best Bachelor’s in Health Science Degree Programs.”

TheBestSchools.org, a leading resource for students seeking informed decisions regarding campus and online education opportunities, selected USD’s programs based on several weighted factors, including academic excellence, course offerings, accomplishment of faculty, and reputation for providing online degrees. USD's health sciences offering through the School of Health Sciences began in the fall of 2009 to help meet the needs of an aging statewide population as well as to provide students with access to a degree in the fast-growing health care sector. Graduates of health sciences programs have employment opportunities in hospitals, public health agencies, insurance companies, community organizations, research laboratories, the pharmaceutical industry, and more.

“A Bachelor in Health Science degree is a springboard to many different areas and types of jobs in the health care industry,” stated June Larson, associate dean of the School of Health Sciences and director of the health sciences major. “This is the perfect time for students to major in health sciences; to get in on the ground level as health care jobs are projected to be in demand for the next 50 years because of the aging baby boomer population.”

USD’s No. 15 ranking joined other Midwest universities on the list, including the University of Missouri (No. 4), DePaul University (No. 7), Indiana University (No. 9), Drake University (No. 10) and Cleveland State University (No. 21). TheBestSchools.org ranked Boston University first overall.
