Department of Chemistry at The U Receives Award for Academic Excellence and Innovation

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota Department of Chemistry is the recipient of the 2nd annual Award for Academic Excellence and Innovation. The award was developed to increase the visibility of extraordinary academics at The U and to recognize individuals or units that have played a role in moving academic programs toward true national leadership. Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Royce Engstrom, presented the award to the department.

Recipients must show a distinguished contribution to the teaching, research, and service missions of the university. The department receives a trophy and $2,000 to spend however they choose. The selection is made by the president and the provost, to show appreciation for hard work and ingenuity by a group of faculty or students. The Department of Political Science was the inaugural recipient last year.

“The Department of Chemistry received this year’s award because they continue to show tremendous leadership in undergraduate research efforts and in mentoring students for successful futures,” Engstrom said. “The work of the entire department is leading to remarkable accomplishments for students, faculty and the university.”

Dr. Mary Berry, chair of the department, who is currently on sabbatical, was home to receive the award on behalf of the department. She was joined by Dr. Andrew Sykes, acting chair, and numerous other professors from the chemistry department.

Recent success stories for the Department of Chemistry include a National Science Foundation grant award to fund the new Northern Plains Undergraduate Research Center, one of only three in the nation; grant funding from the state of South Dakota to become one of only four of Governor Round’s 2010 Research Centers; and mentoring students who’ve gone on to receive Goldwater, Truman and National Science Foundation scholarships.
