The Psychological Services Center (PSC) serves as a teaching, training, and research center supported by the American Psychological Association-accredited doctoral training program in Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of South Dakota.
The PSC is an outpatient clinic that provides assessment and therapy services to children, adults, couples and families through a variety of modalities including brief and longer term individual, family and group psychotherapy. All psychological services are confidential.
Consultation on individual cases and general programs are available from the clinical faculty and doctoral students. Training workshops on a wide variety of topics may be arranged for individuals and groups. Examples include stress management, eating disorders, child abuse, depression, spousal/partner abuse and suicide prevention.
Psychological services are provided primarily by doctoral students in clinical psychology under the supervision of clinical psychology faculty (licensed psychologists).
At the time of initial contact, a screening interview will be scheduled. The purpose of this interview is to obtain a description of the presenting problem and to determine if services offered through the PSC are appropriate for the concerns identified. If services through the PSC are appropriate, a therapist will be assigned. The therapist will schedule subsequent appointments and will collaborate with the client to determine the type of evaluation and/or treatment best suited to the client's needs. If services through the PSC are not appropriate, referral options will be provided.
A one-time fee of $20 is charged to all clients at the end of the first clinical session. This fee covers assessment materials and general administrative costs. Full-time USD students pay only the $20 initial fee. Community clients are charged fees for psychotherapy on a sliding scale based on their income and ability to pay. Family members of full-time students, part-time students, USD faculty and staff members and their immediate families are charged one-half of the sliding scale fee.
We are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except for the noon hours) and evening hours are set at the beginning of each academic year.
The PSC does not offer 24-hour crisis services.
There are several alternatives for after hours telephone crises services in the area:
