NCAA Eligibility

Student-athletes must meet all NCAA general eligibility requirements, as well as University of South Dakota academic requirements, to be eligible for intercollegiate competition at USD. A compliance representative in the USD Office of the Registrar determines this eligibility by certifying that each student-athlete meets the following NCAA rules.

 
 Incoming Freshmen Student-Athletes
 
 
  • Student-athletes entering the University of South Dakota as freshmen with no previous full-time college attendance must meet specific academic requirements as certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center in addition to being enrolled as a full-time student at USD (enrolled in at least 12 semester hours).

    Registering with the NCAA Eligibility Center also includes an amateurism certification section used to determine the amateur status of freshman and transfer prospective student-athletes. Student-athletes must request and receive their Final Amateurism Certification to be eligible to participate in intercollegiate athletics.
      
 
 
 Transfer Student-Athletes
 
 
  • Student-athletes transferring to the University of South Dakota from another institution must meet a specific set of NCAA rules. The NCAA has final approval for exceptions to or the waiving of these rules.
  • Registering with the NCAA Eligibility Center also includes an amateurism certification section used to determine the amateur status of freshman and transfer prospective student-athletes. Student-athletes must request and receive their Final Amateurism Certification to be eligible to participate in intercollegiate athletics.
 
 
Continuing Eligibility

Student-athletes who begin taking classes at USD are expected to maintain certain academic standards in order to be eligible for practice and competition. NCAA legislation requires that student-athletes maintain progress toward a degree in order to maintain their academic eligibility.

  • Entering 2nd Year of Enrollment
    • 24 Semester Credits
    • 18 Semester Credits earned during academic year
    • 90% of GPA for graduation (certified term by term)
    • 6 credits per term
       
  • Entering 3rd Year of Enrollment
    • 40% of degree requirements completed
    • 18 Semester Credits earned during academic year
    • 95% of GPA for graduation (certified term by term)
    • 6 credits per term
       
  • Entering 4th Year of Enrollment
    • 60% of degree requirements completed
    • 18 Semester Credits earned during academic year
    • 100% of GPA for graduation (certified term by term)
    • 6 credits per term
       
  • Entering 5th Year of Enrollment
    • 80% of degree requirements completed
    • 18 Semester Credits earned during academic year
    • 100% of GPA for graduation (certified term by term)
    • 6 credits per term
