Animal Resource Center

Many benefits for both humans and animals are derived from the ethical, humane use of laboratory animals for biomedical and behavioral research. The Animal Resource Center at the U helps make these benefits possible by:

  • Promoting humane care of animals used in biomedical and behavioral research, teaching, and testing at the University of South Dakota.
  • Providing resources, technical assistance, and information to researchers to ensure a high level of scientific validity.
  • Ensuring compliance with federal regulations.
  • Maintaining high ethical standards.
IACUC

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is a federally mandated committee that is responsible for oversight and evaluation of the University of South Dakota's animal program, procedures, and facilities to ensure that they are consistent with the recommendations in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Animal Welfare Regulations, and the Public Heath Service Policy. The University of South Dakota Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee mission is to assure that the institution is caring for and using animals in ways judged to be scientifically, technically, and humanely appropriate and assist investigators in fulfilling their obligation to plan and conduct animal experiments in accord with the highest scientific, humane, and ethical principles.
