PTSD and TBI Research
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury Research
Researchers at the U study traumatic brain injury, stroke, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, and decision making. Understanding molecular, cellular, and physiological process allows scientists to devise new treatment strategies, devices, and drug delivery methods.
Social scientists develop assessment tools to monitor rehabilitation progress, diagnose stress disorders, and craft counseling techniques particularly applicable to rural and underserved communities, including areas to which many U.S. soldiers return after completing their service.
The National Institutes of Health provides primary funding for USD's research in neuroscience and behavioral science, and funds an IDeA Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) at the U's Sanford School of Medicine. Additionally, USD is currently collaborating with the U.S. Department of Defense to establish a functional magnetic resonance imaging facility in South Dakota for research and clinical application in brain imaging.
