required immunizations for registration at the U

Immunization Requirements for Registration
To insure congruency with state law, the South Dakota Board of Regions tailored its existing immunization policy during the 2008-2009 academic school year. The new statute applies to every student (graduate or undergraduate) who has been admitted to a post-secondary institution-either public or private- in the state of South Dakota.  It states that all students who meet established criteria are obligated to demonstrate immunity to measles, mumps and rubella.

Relevant criteria that drive the need for compliance are:

* Age:  Students born on or after January 1, 1957 must comply; those born prior to this date are excused.
* Course Schedule: Students who register for two or more credit-bearing classes are obligated to comply.
* Academic Background: Students who have completed prior collegiate work in the state of South Dakota initiated prior to July 1,2008 are excused from compliance.

Acceptable Evidence of Immunity to MMR Includes:
* Immunization record which specifies administration of two doses of the MMR vaccine.
* Medical laboratory report that proves immunity to MMR.- i.e., Titer reports.

If you have only one immunization, the required second immunization may be administered not less than one month after the first immunization.  Students who fail to provide the required proof of immunization will be REFUSED REGISTRATION until in compliance.

All new incoming students are required to use the Mandatory Immunization Form.  This form has been updated to emphasize the importance of receiving Meningococcal and Hepatitis B vaccines.  Please read the Instruction Sheet carefully if you wish to waive the receipt of these vaccinations.  Documentation of these vaccinations or a signed waiver of these vaccinations is required.
The Mandatory Immunization Form can be completed by your doctor's office with a signature by a health professional or you may attach copies of your immunization records in lieu of signature.  PLEASE DO NOT SEND IN SHOT RECORDS WITHOUT THE ACCOMPANYING FORM.  Delays are caused if the immunization record cannot be matched with the student.  This can be alleviated if records are sent with the Mandatory Immunization Form.

Recommendations regarding Meningococcal Vaccine
College Students, especially freshmen living in residence halls, are at a slightly increased risk for contracting meningococcal disease.  The bacterial form of this disease can lead to serious complications such as swelling of the brain, coma, and even death within a short period of time.  Two vaccines are currently available that decrease, but not completely eliminate a person's risk of acquiring meningococcal meningitis.  Please ask your healthcare provider about acquiring this immunization or come to Student Health when you arrive on campus this fall.

Recommendations regarding Hepatitis B Vaccine
Hepatitis B (HBV) is a serious viral infection of the liver that can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, liver cancer, liver failure and even death.  This disease is completely preventable.  Hepatitis B vaccine is available to all age groups to prevent Hepatitis B viral infection.  A series of three (3) doses of vaccine are required for optimal protection.  Missed doses may still be sought to complete the series if one or two have been acquired.  The HBV vaccine has a record of safety and is believed to confer lifelong immunity in most cases.  Please ask your healthcare provider about the benefits of this vaccination.
