Brown Bag Lunch Programs are free and open to the public. They begin at 12:05 and end at 12:55 PM. Bring a brown bag lunch. Or, if you prefer to eat early, late, or not at all, please join us anyway. Coffee and tea will be available for 50 cents.

The NMM's public programming is underwritten by South Dakota Arts Council support provided through the S. D. Department of Tourism and State Development and the National Endowment for the Arts, the USD Student Association, and the members of The Stradivari Society, a fund-raising initiative of the Museum's Board of Trustees.

Note: All events are held in the Arne B. Larson Concert Hall, unless otherwise noted.

Conference, Celebrating the 500th Birthday of Andrea Amati, "The Secrets, Lives, and Violins of the Great Cremona Makers 1505-1744." The National Music Museum presents a four-day conference to explore the methods and workshops of the great Cremonese makers as well as the cultural and economic influences of the times, including concerts and a banquet.

July 8

Curtis & Loretta

  Brown bag lunch program, An Eclectic Musical Journey, featuring Curtis Teague & Loretta Simonet, acoustic folk music duo from Minneapolis, with their unique blend of traditional Celtic tunes, American folk songs, original music, and familiar old-time songs. Acclaimed for their exquisite harmonies and incisive songwriting, the duo will perform on an array of stringed instruments including, Celtic harp, mandocello, mandolin, guitar, clawhammer banjo, and ukulele. 12:05 p.m. Free.

Cleveland Duo with James Umble

  Brown bag lunch program, Six Into Three, The Cleveland Duo, piano and violin, with James Umble, saxophone. Members of the renowned Cleveland Orchestra, this exciting threesome are pioneers in the chamber music world. U. S. Air Force Heartland of America Band Clarinet Quartet

  Brown bag lunch program, Clarinet Virtuosity, Clarinet Quartet of the United States Air Force Heartland of America Band. Celebrating Great American Guitars

at the National Music Museum

Gallery Opening and Conference

National guitar conference and opening of the Lillibridge Gallery and a major, permanent exhibition, Great American Guitars, featuring the D'Angelico/D'Aquisto/Gudelsky Workshop Collection—given in memory of Paul Gudelsky (1963-1996)—along with guitars from the John R. Barmeyer and Brian Fischer Collections and others. Friday afternoon and all day Saturday, closing with a free, Saturday evening concert by Thom Bresh, the great Nashville guitarist and entertainer (details below).

Thom Bresh and the late Johnny Cash hold a 1969 Martin guitar, once owned and played by Thom's father, the legendary Merle Travis. Bresh, a Hall of Famer and one of today's leading guitar players, whether it be country-western, folk, or jazz, will play this guitar and Johnny Cash's Bon Aqua, both from the NMM's collections, as well as his own Super Dualette by Del Langejans. T. Wilson King of Vermillion will be the opening act.

Brown bag lunch program, Rythmes de la tradition du Burkina Faso, featuring the dynamic, West African djembé (drum) virtuoso, Amadou Kiénou. A folk musician, dancer, and griot (story teller) by trade, Kiénou "wrests from his instrument polyrhythms of dizzing complexity, drawing the listener into a whirl of hypnotic, chattering beats." 12:05 p.m. Free.
