NMM 5821. Clarinet in B-flat by Graves & Co., Winchester, New Hampshire, ca. 1830. Four sections. Stamped on barrel, top joint, and bottom joint: GRAVES & Co / WINCHESTER / N. H.; on bell: [eagle] / GRAVES & Co / WINCHESTER / N. H. / B. Boxwood, ivory ferrules (one replaced with metal). Eight brass keys with flat, round key covers, mounted in blocks and round rings; springs attached to keys (SATK). Bottom joint stock bulge. Cranked f-sharp/c-sharp² key. Graves & Company was founded by Samuel Graves (1794-1878) in West Fairlee, Vermont, in 1824. Graves subsequently moved to Wincester, New Hampshire, in order to tap into water power from a dam on the Ashuelot river, and opened a new workshop there in 1830.
