South Dakota Educational Content Standards Fourth Grade The following list was selected from the South Dakota Content Standards for Fourth Grade. These specific standards can be met through the tours offered at the National Music Museum (not every standard is met in every tour offered). This information can be used to assist teachers in selecting appropriate tours and to enable teachers to request specific standards they would like to see met during a visit to the Museum. It can also be used to justify the field trip and the cost of transportation. The student will: compare tales from different cultures. compare life experiences to situations/events write in response to information from various sources to develop personal understanding. respond courteously and respectfully to the ideas and thoughts of others. listen and share responses in group learning activities. ask questions to determine the intended meaning and purpose of the speaker's message. observe and assess various non-verbal cues. distinguish between facts and opinions. connect prior experiences, insights, and ideas to what is heard or seen. paraphrase what others have said for clarification. use appropriate structures for conveying information. determine the use of formal or informal language appropriate to the situation. present knowledge, ideas, and requests clearly using appropriate vocabulary and sentence structure. use correct subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, and appropriate verb tense when speaking. emphasize meaning in conversations, discussions, and oral presentations through the use of non-verbal cues. differentiate between state and national boundaries. define regions as categorized by geographic location. develop questions to formulate hypotheses and use data to make predictions. make distinctions among predictions, observations, and conclusions. analyze simple and complex machines to determine how the machines make work easier. describe various influences human activity can have on ecosystems. describe how people continue to invent new ways of doing things, solving problems, and getting work done. investigate how new ideas and inventions often affect people. explain how inventions have changed people's lives. describe given problem situations in multiple ways. analyze geometric figures using size, shape, orientation, congruence, and similarity. measure time using fractions. associate verbal names, written word names, and the appropriate symbols in mathematical sentences. develop survey questions and systematically collect data.
