Traveling To Vermillion

"Four Centuries of Great Keyboard Instruments: What They Tell Us"

National Music Museum
The University of South Dakota
May 16-19, 2003

For those planning to arrive by air:

Vermillion is served by both the Sioux City, Iowa, and the Sioux Falls, South Dakota, airports. The major carrier is Northwest Airlines (through Minneapolis), but service is also provided by United (through Chicago or Denver) and American (through St. Louis).

Fares are competitive, particularly into Sioux City. Since you will be staying over a Saturday night, you should be able to take advantage of good rates, if you book early and use a travel agent who is alert to the almost continuous special offers being made by the airlines. We often can fly round-trip from here to the East or West coasts with ticket costs in the $250-300 range, sometimes lower. A third alternative is to fly into Omaha (a highly competitive airport) and rent a car for the two-hour drive north on I-29 to Vermillion.

There are early morning flights from the East Coast that will get you here early Friday afternoon. Despite the two-hour time change, there are also some early morning flights from the West Coast that will get you here early Friday afternoon. There are also overnight flights from West Coast cities into Minneapolis that will get you here Friday morning. And, of course, with such modest motel rates in Vermillion, you may prefer to fly in on Thursday afternoon and enjoy a leisurely Friday morning in the Museum galleries, before the meetings get underway.

The Museum will provide low-cost shuttle service from both airports to Vermillion on Thursday afternoon and evening, Friday morning, and Friday afternoon until 3:00 p.m. We will provide shuttle service back to the airports on Tuesday beginning at 6:00 a.m. (it is a 45-minute drive to the Sioux City airport and a 65-minute drive to the Sioux Falls airport).

Because Museum staff and our students must be on hand during the meeting, we can not meet flights that arrive in Sioux Falls after 3:00 p.m. on Friday nor in Sioux City after 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

Please also note that we can not get you back to flights on Tuesday that depart before 8:30 a.m. out of Sioux City or 9:00 a.m. out of Sioux Falls.

Also, we can not meet any flights, arriving or departing, on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday. If you plan to arrive late or leave early or simply want to have the freedom of a car, both airports are served by the major car rental agencies. Advance reservations are recommended. There is no public transportation between Vermillion and the airports.

There is inter-city Greyhound/Jackrabbit bus service into Vermillion. The nearest Amtrak station is in Omaha, Nebraska, where the trains stop in the middle of the night. From Omaha to Vermillion, you need to take a bus or rent a car for the two-hour drive north on I-29.

Supplementary information for those arriving from Europe or Japan:

In order to avoid the complication of changing airlines (and airports) in New York, we recommend traveling by Northwest Airlines/KLM from Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, or London, via Minneapolis, to Sioux City or Sioux Falls, or United from Milan or Paris via Chicago. If you plan to make the trip to Vermillion in one day, please plan to do it on Thursday (or earlier in the week, if you prefer), so that we can meet your flight. If you want to return home in one day, you can fly out of Sioux City/Sioux Falls on Tuesday morning (or later in the week, if you prefer) and be back in Europe the next morning.

For those of you who plan to visit other cities in the States while you are here, some airlines have special fares that let you make several stops. These special tickets must be bought in Europe. Check with your travel agent. Just be certain that you pick an airline that flies into Sioux City or Sioux Falls.

From Japan, you can take Northwest Airlines, via Minneapolis, to Sioux City or Sioux Falls.

For those planning to arrive by car:

Vermillion is located on South Dakota Highway 50, six miles west of the interchange with Interstate 29 (linking Kansas City, Omaha, Sioux City, Sioux Falls, Fargo, and Winnipeg), midway between I-80 (New York to San Francisco) and I-90 (Boston to Seattle). When you reach the edge of town (just before the orange overpass), do not branch off to the right on the Highway 50 bypass. Instead, continue straight ahead, under the overpass, on Hwy. 50 business route, which becomes Cherry Street. All of the motels are on Cherry, except for The Prairie Inn, which is on Dakota Street, one block north of the intersection of Cherry and Dakota.

To reach the Museum, turn left on Pine Street (one block past the first traffic light, with a Burger King on the corner) and go south to Clark Street (the first stop sign). Turn right and go west three blocks to the corner of Clark and Yale Streets. The Museum is the two-story, limestone building on the right (north side of the street) with a courtyard and fountain in front. Metered visitor parking is available in the parking lot on the right (east side of the building). However, there is free parking on the streets just south of the Museum and in the lot at night and on weekends.

If driving into Vermillion from the west on Hwy. 50 business route, turn right on N. Dakota Street (second traffic light) and go south to Clark Street (first stop sign). If driving in from the west on the Hwy. 50 bypass, turn right on N. Dakota Street (no stop light) and go south to Clark Street (second stop sign). In each instance, turn left on Clark and go two blocks east; the Museum will be on your left.
