NMM 10456 a & b.  Pair of timpani by J. R. Lafleur & Son, London, late 19th century. Stamped:  J. R. Lafleur & Son / Manufacturers / London. W. C.  Copper bowls made from multiple pieces, fastened with tab seams, and hammered into shape. Animal skin heads tucked around flesh hoop, using iron counter-hoops to provide tension. Features cable (or wire) mechanism with turnbuckle to adjust pitch, patented in 1837 by Cornelius Ward. Board of Trustees, 2003.
