NMM 5910. Mando-bass by Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Company, Kalamazoo, ca. 1923-1924.
Style J. Serial number 76525 or 74563 (number faded).
Arne B. Larson Estate, 1988.
The mando-bass was a long-running model for Gibson, appearing in their catalogs from 1912 to 1940, though it was last manufactured about 1930. The mando-bass could be fitted with extendable endpins in two positions, at the bottom of the ribs or on the lower side of the treble rib, so that it could be played in front of the performer like a double bass or to the side like a mandolin.
