South Dakota Educational Content Standards Seventh Grade The following list was selected from the South Dakota Content Standards for Seventh Grade. These specific standards can be met through the tours offered at the National Music Museum (not every standard is met in every tour offered). This information can be used to assist teachers in selecting appropriate tours and to enable teachers to request specific standards they would like to see met during a visit to the Museum. It can also be used to justify the field trip and the cost of transportation. The student will: describe how prior knowledge may affect understanding of new knowledge. connect the content and ideas in specific texts to other topics and related content areas. compare and contrast information about one topic contained in different selections. write reports that convey a clear and accurate focus, supported by various resources. write to compare and contrast information from multiple sources. support interpretations or judgements with information from a variety of sources. demonstrate appropriate listening behaviors in various social situations. ask specific questions to seek elaboration and clarification of ideas and opinions. use appropriate listening and interpersonal skills in various group situations. understand the use of non-verbal skills when communicating with others. ask questions designed to elicit information as evidence to validate a specific message. organize information received according to subject or topic for greater retention. relate new information to prior knowledge for effective recall. determine the language and style appropriate to the purpose and topic. use grammar and vocabulary appropriate to the audience and situation. identify and define the major kinds of non-verbal communication people use. understand the concept of culture by explaining how culture and technology affect perceptions of places and regions, explaining the spatial distribution of cultures both locally and in other parts of the United States and the world, and describing how cultures and cultural landscapes change. understand the effects of interactions between human and physical systems and the changes in meaning, use, distribution, and importance of resources by describing how human modifications of physical environments in one place often lead to changes in other places; explain the role of technology in the human modification of the physical environment; explain how the characteristics of different physical environments provide opportunities for or place constraints on human activities; identify how technology affects the definition of, access to, and use of resources; and describe why people have different viewpoints with respect to resource use. analyze the geographic, political, economic and social structure of each region/country with emphasis on location and physical setting; the cultural characteristics of the people; the ways people have adapted to, changed, and used their environment in the past and present; the flow and interaction of people, ideas and products as they are influenced by transportation and communication systems; and the role this country/region has in the international setting. understand the need for continual re-evaluation of scientific knowledge. interpret information to make predictions and/or justify conclusions. relate waves to the transfer of energy. describe characteristics of sound waves. discuss science issues. describe how cultural backgrounds and beliefs of different groups can affect scientific thinking. describe how society and need can affect the direction taken by science. add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers. make inferences and predictions based on the analysis of student collected data.
