South Dakota Educational Content Standards
Sixth Grade
The following list was selected from the South Dakota Content
Standards for Sixth Grade. These specific standards can be met through the
tours offered at the National Music Museum (not every standard is
met in every tour offered). This information can be used to assist
teachers in selecting appropriate tours and to enable teachers to request
specific standards they would like to see met during a visit to the
Museum. It can also be used to justify the field trip and the cost of
transportation.
The student will:

connect main ideas and concepts to other sources and related topics.
- explore a variety of literary works representative of various
cultures and times.
- explain how literature can be used to better understand other time
periods and events.
- describe how the text reflects an author's attitudes, traditions, and
heritage.
- use writing as a means to paraphrase/summarize what is read/heard.
- write to connect knowledge within and across disciplines.
- write reports which focus on key ideas, issues, or situations and are
supported by references.
- describe appropriate listening behaviors in various social
situations.
- ask questions to seek clarification of ideas.
- summarize, respond to, and evaluate group activities.
- distinguish between intentional and unintentional non-verbal
communication.
- examine the reliability and authority of speaker information.
- use questions to clarify instructions and directions.
- classify information received according to subject or topic for
effective retention.
- combine new information with prior knowledge for recall.
- present information in conversational and small group settings.
- choose language and style appropriate to the interest and background
knowledge of the
audience.
- explain how scientific knowledge and processes have evolved over time.
- base conclusions on scientific evidence obtained from a variety of
sources.
- analyze the relationship among mass, weight, volume, and density.
- discuss science issues.
- determine how science helps drive research and provides knowledge for
better
understanding.
- investigate how cultural backgrounds and beliefs of different groups
can affect
scientific thinking.
- explain how society and need can affect the direction taken by
science.
- model addition and subtraction with integers.
- associate mathematical symbols with word names for rational numbers.
- use data to support or reject hypotheses.
- identify probabilities of events and predict outcomes.
